Today's Prompt: Pick up the book you are currently reading and turn to page 37. Use the first line of the page as the beginning of your story.

Riding on something that doesn't move,
spinning your wheels endlessly.
Like the wheel of life that you can never leave,
you can only fall off.
Hold on to that wheel as long as you can,
for no one can climb down.
Live your life and don't let go,
because now is not your time.

Frosted

My house is covered in pure white snow
which decorates it with big white pearls
There are candy canes on my front lawn
spiraling and glittering in the light
The icicles hang from the roof like little spears
threatening to fall at any moment
I break one off and place it in my mouth
and it melts into sugary icing delight

A Day in Fall

The park of red in the midst of grey
tumbling along its destined path
before floating up to where it once fell from
where the green that it was ceases to exist

The sound is the fluttering of a million wings
that fly through the fire colored trees

The air is filled with with the scent of leaves and moss
and the paper which gently flutters beneath my hand
as I stare into the distance and whisper to the wind

Today's Prompt: Pretend you are carried away by a bunch of balloons.

  She walks quietly in the wind, her hair flowing behind her. Her bunch of colorful  balloons is swept up in the wind, carrying her with them. She can see the world from above. She sees a man sitting on the park bench, reading the daily newspaper. She sees a woman walking her dog, and a child eating an ice cream cone. She sees ducks waddling from a pond. She rises higher. Soon her feet touch the tips of the clouds, and she looks up. She wonders what will happen to her. When will she stop?

The Flame

Red gold
a bit of blue
rising up
to meet the sky

A spark hits the ground
forced by moving air

How to Write a Good Story: Setting

  So, some time ago we worked on characters. We worked on who the characters are and tips on how to create good ones. Today we will work on setting.
  Setting is the time and place the story takes place, or in other words, the WHEN and WHERE.

Time- Year, month, day, season, clock time, morning, afternoon, evening, light, dark, dawn, dusk, sun, moon, and stars are all forms of time.

Place- Building, city, state, country, geography, urban, suburban, rural, weather, indoors, outdoors, and landmarks are all forms of place.

**Create a sense of time and place**

How to Create a Realistic Setting-

• Try to base the setting off places you have been
• Use the five senses-Sensory Detail
• Help your reader feel like they are really there 
• Give the reader hits about time and place

Weekly Writing Prompt

Today's Prompt:  Imagine you found an old treasure map.  Where does it lead and what do you find?

There I was, standing at the mouth of a cave. It was in there, I knew it was. It had all started a few days ago.  I had been in the attic of an old house, when I spotted an old map tacked to the wall.  In the corner of the map, it told there would be great treasure at the end of the trail. I had taken the old map down and gotten ready to follow the path laid out for me. I had followed the map all the way to Cold Spring, NY.  I had followed the map though the trees, stopping only one to eat the pie I had with me. There I was, standing at the mouth of a cave. Do I dare go in? Do I dare stay out?

How to Write a Good Story: Characters

  So, The next few posts will be on how to write a good fictional story. Today we are going to work on characters.
  The characters in a story are WHO the story was about. There are two types of characters: Major Characters and Minor Characters.

Major Characters-
Protagonist: good guy, hero, the one you root for
Antagonist: bad guy, villain, the one you root against

Minor Characters-
The people who fill in the story. Some are more important than others.

How to Create Realistic Characters-

• Give them a name
• Describe what they look like
• Hint at their age
• Give them a personality
• Base them off of people you know
• Give them faults
